At DCF Guns we understand that firearm accidents occur, but with the proper handling of a firearm, the chances of having an accident can be reduced to almost zero. Therefore we have been motivated to write two blog posts with safety information on how to properly manage a firearm.

Always Keep Your Firearm Pointed in a Safe Direction

Under no circumstances point your gun at anything you do not intend to shoot. As we stated before, accidents might happen, but if the gun muzzle was never pointed at something you didn’t intend to shoot there would be virtually no firearm accidents. If an accidental discharge occurs, it is almost impossible to injure someone or something, as long as the muzzle is pointing in a safe direction.

Make Sure Your Gun Is Unloaded When Not In Use

Designate a safe place to store firearms and ammunition when not in use and make sure your gun or rifle is unloaded, especially if you have children or unauthorized adults around you. Firearms should be loaded only when you are going to use them. It is very important that whenever you handle a firearm or hand it to someone, you open the action immediately and visually check the chamber, receiver, and magazine to be certain they do not contain any ammunition.

Don’t Rely On Your Gun’s “Safety” Mechanical Device

The key to prevent firearm accidents is to treat every gun as though it can fire at any time. The “safety” on any gun is a mechanical device designed as a supplement to proper gun handling, but like any other mechanical device, it can become inoperable at the worst possible time. Never touch the trigger on a firearm until you actually intend to shoot, even if it has the “safety” on.
